Biography
Megan K. McCarthy is a partner at Ball Ball Matthew and Novak’s Montgomery office. Her vigorous litigation practice is in the fields of auto liability, trucking defense, bad faith defense, dram shop claim, personal injury defense, general insurance, and construction law. In her 21 years of experience, Megan has tried over 180 cases in Alabama State Circuit and District Courts, and Federal courts throughout Alabama, with great success. In addition to handling a multitude of litigated matters, Megan has offered opinions on various insurance coverage issues, performed examinations under oath of insureds, filed declaratory judgment actions, and authored a number of amicus curiae briefs on insurance coverage issues.
Megan was President of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association (“ADLA”) during the 2024-2025 term. ADLA is a group of lawyers whose goal is to create an environment for civil defense lawyers that facilitates working collectively and sharing resources. She also previously served as the President of the Young Lawyers Section of ADLA, served two terms on the ADLA Board, served as Secretary/Treasurer of ADLA and served as Vice President of ADLA.
Megan is also a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (“FDCC”), which is a professional trade association of vetted and premier defense and corporate counsel and industry executives dedicated to leading the profession by advancing the principles of integrity, professionalism, fair civil justice, intellectual capital, and fostering the trust and value of fellowship.
Megan was also inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (“ABOTA”) in 2024. ABOTA is a national invitation-only organization of trial lawyers and judges. Members must have at least five years of active experience as trial lawyers, have tried at least 7 civil jury trials to conclusion and possess additional litigation experience. ABOTA membership consists of more than 7,300 lawyers—equally balanced between plaintiff and defense—and judges spread among 95 chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Members must also exhibit the virtues of civility, integrity and professionalism.
Megan is also an Alabama Law Foundation Fellow. Fellows are about 1% of lawyers in the State of Alabama that provide leadership and support for the Alabama Foundation’s programs that promote access to justice.
At the request of the Alabama District Court Judge’s Association, Megan authored District Court Trial and Evidence Practice Pointers for publication in The Alabama Lawyer, demonstrating her expertise in handling matters in their forum.
Despite her busy schedule, Megan finds time to mentor young lawyers and serves as a faculty member on various continuing education programs, and as a judge for mock trial competitions for the State’s law schools.
Megan is a graduate of the University of the South - Sewanee, where she received a B.S. in Chemistry. While at Sewanee, Megan played sweeper on the Varsity field hockey team, played the oboe in the college orchestra and was the President of the Inter-Sorority Council.
Megan also graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law. She served on the Law Review, as its Production Editor, and was named Editor of the Year in 2003-2004. Megan was a member of the National Environmental Law Moot Court Review for University of Baltimore School of Law.
Upon her graduation from law school, she served as Clerk to the Honorable C. Clarke Raley of the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Maryland.
She and her husband, Tom, enjoy spending time with their son, Brooks. Megan also enjoys running, and has run in 20 marathons and ultra-marathons.
