Martindale-Hubbell awards its ratings based upon anonymous surveys of attorneys and judges who are asked to rank an attorney’s legal acumen and ethics. According to Martindale-Hubbell, a rating of “AV Preeminent” is a mark of “significant rating accomplishment – a testament to the fact that a lawyer’s peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence.” Martindale-Hubbell’s Lawyer Ratings serve as an objective indicator that a lawyer has the highest ethical standards and professional ability and are used by buyers of legal services to justify their hiring decisions.
