Mr. Ortega practices along the Gulf Coast where he has represented insurers in coverage disputes, hurricane claims, and extra-contractual matters. In addition to insurance coverage, Mr. Ortega represents individuals and corporations in other complex litigation, including medical malpractice, specifically long-term care, products liability, general liability matters, criminal defense and white collar matters. He has extensive trial experience as both first and second chair trial counsel. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Ortega served as an Assistant District Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit of Alabama (Mobile County) from 1999-2002 where he participated in over 20 jury trials, 15 as lead attorney.
Mr. Ortega is admitted to practice in all state and federal district courts in both Alabama and Mississippi. He is admitted to both the 5th and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeals. In addition, he has been permitted to appear and participate as co-counsel in the State of Louisiana, including the USDC for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Mr. Ortega graduated from the Cumberland School of Law in 1998 where he made Dean's List his third year. He was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1998. He earned his BA degree in Economics with a double minor in Business Administration from Auburn University in 1995. Prior to Auburn, he attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia where he played varsity football and junior varsity baseball.
Mr. Ortega taught at the Mobile Police Academy, and has been a presenter at local seminars, including Insurance Coverage Litigation. In March, 2009, he served on a panel at the ABA Section of Litigation Insurance Coverage's Annual Seminar in Tucson, Arizona where he addressed issues arising out of the Henkel, and U.S. Filter cases. In October, 2009, he served on a panel at the DRI Annual Meeting to discuss Recruiting and Retaining Minority Lawyers in Small Legal Markets and Small Firms. He is a member of the Alabama and Mississippi State Bar Associations. He is on the Alabama State Bar Board of Bar Commissioners. Mr. Ortega is a member of the Mobile Bar Association, and presently serves on the Executive Committee. In addition, he is a member of the ABA Section of Litigation, and Defense Research Institute where he is a member of the Diversity Steering Committee.
Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Mr. Ortega lives in Mobile with his wife, Suzette, and their three daughters. When not spending time with his family, he occupies his free time enjoying golf, running, snow skiing, and triathlons.
